The right IGCSE Maths tutor should help you understand the step you cannot yet do alone. Start with your exact course, then compare how tutors explain, check understanding and plan practice. A confident presentation or impressive results photo cannot tell you whether a lesson will address your own mistakes. Bring a recent marked question instead: it gives both of you something useful to discuss. This guide includes an eight-question interview, an algebra example and a first-lesson checklist you can use whether you want online IGCSE Maths lessons or a tutor near you in Egypt.
Match the tutor to your board, syllabus, tier and examination year. Then ask them to diagnose a real mistake and set a small task you can complete independently. Cambridge lists separate 2025–2027 and 2028–2030 Mathematics 0580 syllabuses, so “I teach IGCSE” is only the start of the conversation.

Context: Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics 0580, examinations 2025–2027, syllabus version 3. Other boards and later examination years need their own specification.
Which IGCSE Maths course are you actually taking?
Write down the qualification before contacting a tutor: exam board, syllabus code, tier and exam year. Cambridge Mathematics 0580 has a 2025–2027 syllabus and a separate 2028–2030 version. Cambridge says the syllabus year is the examination year, which makes this a more useful starting point than your school year alone.
Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Mathematics A is a different qualification. A resource labelled “IG maths” does not establish that it matches your course. Ask your school for the official specification if you are unsure. Save its cover alongside your timetable and calculator requirements so everyone works from the same information.
| Information to share | Why the tutor needs it |
|---|---|
| Board and code | To select the right specification and question style |
| Tier or level | To avoid practising content outside your entry |
| Exam year | To check which syllabus changes apply |
| Recent marked work | To see your starting point instead of guessing |
What should you ask an IGCSE Maths tutor before booking?
Ask for an explanation of their teaching process, not a promise of a particular grade. A useful answer describes how they identify gaps, select practice and check whether you can repeat the method later. Tell them what happens when you get stuck: choosing a formula, rearranging an equation and finishing under time pressure are different problems.
Experience with your board matters, but it should lead to specific decisions. For example, a tutor should explain how they balance topic practice with examination practice. If you need support in Arabic, ask whether explanations can be bilingual while you still learn to read and answer the exam in its required language.
- Which board, code and exam year do you currently teach?
- How would you identify the reason behind my recent mistakes?
- Will I solve questions during the lesson?
- How do you check that I can work without a hint?
- What practice should I do between sessions?
- How will we review repeated mistakes?
- What does the price include, and how long is the lesson?
- What happens if either of us needs to reschedule?
What does a useful explanation look like?
A useful explanation makes the hidden decision visible. In the example below, the answer is x = 7, but the teaching value lies in explaining why every term inside the bracket changes. Ask the tutor to let you try a related question afterwards. Watching someone solve it is different from choosing the next step yourself.
Suppose you wrote 3x − 2 = 15. The tutor should identify distribution as the issue before introducing more equations. They might use a diagram or repeated addition, then check a fresh expression. That is more informative than hearing “be careful” while the tutor finishes the page for you.
worked example: solve 3(x − 2) = 15
- Divide both sides by 3: x − 2 = 5.
- Add 2 to both sides: x = 7.
- Check in the equation: 3(7 − 2) = 15.
- Alternative: expand to 3x − 6 = 15, then solve.
- Independent check: solve 4(y − 3) = 20. Answer: y = 8.
How can you evaluate the first lesson?
Evaluate the first lesson by what you attempted and what the tutor learned about your work. Bring a question you got wrong, one you solved slowly and one you could not start. This three-item sample gives a fuller picture than a single mark or a broad statement such as “algebra is difficult.”
Before the session ends, ask for a short recap: the gap identified, the method practised and the next independent task. You should be able to explain the main idea in your own words. Feeling challenged is normal; leaving without knowing what to practise is a reason to ask for a clearer plan.
| Look for | What you can observe |
|---|---|
| Active practice | You write, explain and attempt questions |
| Specific feedback | The tutor identifies a step rather than labelling you careless |
| Suitable pace | You can ask questions without feeling rushed |
| A next step | You leave with a small, relevant task |
Compare the full cost of IGCSE Maths lessons
Compare lesson duration, group size and included feedback before comparing the headline price. In an illustrative calculation, a 400 EGP lesson lasting 60 minutes equals 400 EGP per hour, while 350 EGP for 45 minutes equals about 467 EGP per hour. These are invented comparison figures, not a market price survey.
The hourly equivalent is useful for budgeting, but it does not measure teaching quality. Ask whether marking between lessons costs extra and whether materials are included. Clarify cancellation arrangements before committing. Start with an agreed learning goal and review the fit before purchasing more sessions than you need.
Build a plan around independent progress
Choose a tutor with whom you can define progress as a visible skill. “Solve a linear equation and check the result” is more useful than “get better at maths.” Keep your first unaided attempt, your corrected solution and a later fresh attempt together. This before-and-after record shows whether the method transfers.
After several lessons, review the evidence together. Are the same mistakes becoming less frequent? Can you start unfamiliar questions? Does your written working make sense? If the answer is unclear, adjust the practice or pace. No tutor can guarantee an examination result, but a clear feedback process makes your next decision easier.

A few more answers.
Do I need a Cambridge tutor or an Edexcel tutor?
Choose someone familiar with the qualification you are taking. General maths knowledge is valuable, but board-specific syllabus coverage and assessment requirements also matter. Send the tutor your official course code and examination year before booking, then ask how they select appropriate practice.
Are online IGCSE Maths lessons suitable?
They can be suitable when you can share written working clearly, hear each other reliably and attempt questions during the session. Check the practical arrangement in advance. The ability to see and discuss your steps matters more than a polished presentation alone.
How many lessons will I need?
There is no reliable number without seeing your current work and knowing your goal. Begin with a focused assessment, agree a manageable practice routine and review progress. A short topic gap and preparation across a whole syllabus require different plans.
Should parents attend every lesson?
Agree this with the student and tutor. Parents can help clarify goals and scheduling, while the student needs space to think and ask questions. A brief progress update can be more useful than interrupting every question during the lesson.
